“Rising Voices 1: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realist Painters” was on view in Pittsburgh from June 4 to Aug. 8, 2021 at the 937 Gallery. This virtual video visit presents installation shots of 29 works by 10 women artists in the exhibition. Their works present a vibrant array of subjects and themes. The tour is narrated by Bennett Prize co-founders Steven Alan Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, Patrick Moore, director of The Andy Warhol Museum and Bennett Prize 2 juror, and Sarah Aziz, curator of the Three Rivers Arts Festival. They discuss the work in the exhibition and the context for The Bennett Prize, which aims to combat “gender and genre” discrimination. The paintings in the exhibition are by finalists for the inaugural award and exhibition of The Bennett Prize, which provides $50,000 biennially to a woman painter whose principal focus is figurative painting. These 10 artists were chosen from a field of 647 entrants from across the United States. This video was created by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
